The Hangover

Publisher: Warner Bros. Running Time: 1 Hour 40 Minutes
Release Date: June 5, 2009 Format: Theatrical

There seems to be a whole new genre of late that I will call the “man comedy”. Not that these movies appeal to men only. They certainly are intended for a male audience, but they are movies that involve men, their immaturity and childish antics. Of late these include movies such as Pineapple Express, Knocked Up and Superbad. The Hangover is one of these movies. If you laughed out loud in those, you will like this. If you found it to be a humor better left for teenagers, you will not.

The Hangover is actually one of the more “grown up” of these man comedies. The story involves a man by the name of Doug who is about to get married. He goes on a bachelor's party with his two best friends and a weird acting soon-to-be brother in-law. Their adventures take them to Sin City where “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas”. Certainly that is not the case for them as they will spend the night of their life drunk and drugged wondering the next morning what the hell happened to them.

Some hilarious stuff ensues over the course of the next two hours. One of them, a dentist, wakes up missing a tooth. They find a tiger locked up in the bathroom that they apparently stole from Mike Tyson. If only that was the end of their problems their life would be a lot easier – and the movie a whole lot more boring. As it is they lose the man who the next day is supposed to get married. Much of the movie involves them just looking for their friend Doug.

While I do not intend to spoil the plot, I can safely say that I enjoyed it. The premise is simple and has been covered before. Yet The Hangover does a good enough job surprising you that the movie still feels fresh despite the over-saturation of man comedies in recent years. Very few of the actors I recognized, but given the success of this film, we are likely to see more of them in the future. Definitely a good date movie or one to see with your friends.
