Star Trek

Release Date: May 7, 2009 Format: Theatrical

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away... oh wait, that is Star Wars. Let's try this again. Take two! Space... the Final Frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds; to seek out new life and new civilizations; to boldly go where no man has gone before. Cut! Perfect. I may not be a huge Star Trek nerd but those few lines are classic in American television history.

The latest Star Trek movie attempts to be as loyal to the original television series from the 1960s as possible. It recreates the universe in such a way as to bring it into the 21st century without leaving behind its own history. To that extent the choice of Chris Pine as James Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock were phenomenal choices. Pine has the same witty charm as William Shatner and Quinto brings a logical, yet emotionally confused Spock to the big screen.

Star Trek follows the early childhood and development of James Kirk until he eventually achieves status of captain of the starship Enterprise. Kirk's father is killed by the Romulan ruler Nero as his ship investigates a lightning storm in space. Nero is set on avenging the death of his wife and child, whose planet was destroyed by a supernova. Throughout the film Kirk and Spock act as rivals to each other, with a gradual forced friendship developing between the two.

While I may not be a big fan of Star Trek (or sci-fi movies in general) I can appreciate a good movie when I see one. Director J. J. Abrams did a fantastic job making Star Trek both accessible to a skeptical audience as well as satisfying to the average Trekkie. The storyline does a good job of building on itself and provides plenty of insight into the development of both James Kirk and Spock. Whether you are a fan of the series or not, Star Trek is a movie worth seeing.

Final: 8.5
